Get the scoop on Helioterra Wines from Winemaker Anne Hubatch in this new Portland Culinary Podcast hosted by Steven Shomler. Learn how Anne began her journey to becoming vintner and how her passion for winemaking has evolved over time to develop into the skill and knack that she has today.
Growing up in Wisconsin Anne had a knack for the culinary arts and enjoyed pairing wines with food during her college days and how the aromatics in wine could transcend a dining experience. Over a casual dinner with friends one night in Madison Anne declare that one day, she would become a winemaker. And as the saying goes, the rest is history!
Anne’s road to Oregon was paved after obtaining her degree in Geology and Environmental Studies while working for a non-profit environmental agency. Not knowing a soul when she moved out West, Anne knew for her that there was no looking back. Soon Anne found herself working at Tualatin Estate Vineyards in the tasting room where she was able to see first hand the business of running a winery. This was an eye opening experience for her and she quickly realized that making wine would be her life’s calling. From there she enrolled in the winemaking program at Chemeketa Community College in McMinnville.
As time went on Anne cut her teeth at a few different wineries in the Willamette Valley working in production and helping to make the wines. Ultimately Anne decided to take a gamble on herself and head out on her own and thus the Helioterra label was born. The first vintage of Helioterra Wines was in 2009.
Today, Anne travels around the country to promote the brand as well as continuing as head winemaker. In the busy and ever changing world of wine Anne continues to make world class wines for consumers. You will also be able to listen to her and Steven taste through a few of her bottlings and get some great ideas for food pairings.
